Interview: Andi Denny // Guys and Dolls

The countdown is on to opening night. With only 3 days to go we thought it would be time to give you the low-down on our very own smooth-talking, high-rolling gambler, Sky Masterson. Taking on the challenge is a familiar face on the GMT stage, and consumate performer, Andi Denny.

Sky Masterson (Andi Denny)

Describe Sky Masterson in three words?

Smooth, guarded, fictional.

What similarities and differences have you found between you and Sky?

I'm a big sinner, and I'm pretty guarded. But only parts of me are fictional (mostly the smooth parts...)

What is your favourite thing about Sky?

It sounds ridiculous, but I really love that he was played by Marlon Brando in the film. I've got a bucket list of actors whose shoes I want to walk in for even just a few nights and however shoogly the steps, and now I've got both Gene Kelly and Marlon Brando covered.

What is your favourite part of rehearsing Guys and Dolls so far?

Ewan Macleod's Big Jule. Hands down. No question. I cackle every time.

What is it like playing romantically opposite Kerry Burley (playing Miss Sarah Brown)?

Well, Kerry and I have known each other for about six years and performed in the same shows multiple times, but never really been in the same scenes so it's excellent to get to do that. She's such a natural and is endlessly supportive. It still feels strange kissing her though - I've always felt like a total kid next to how talented and smart she is. Getting slapped by her, on the other hand, feels about right...

What have you found the most challenging aspect of playing Sky?

The most challenging aspect? The singing, very much the singing, and also the fact that there isn't much dancing for the role. Singing is always the most nerve-wracking part for me, so I tend to use dancing as a bit of a crutch when my confidence is knocked. Not having much dancing to do this time makes me feel quite exposed, especially with so much singing.

What has been the biggest challenge of the show so far?

Coming to terms with how huge I look in a suit...

Can you share a funny rehearsal story?

I'd try to pick one, but I'll just go with getting constantly fondled by Digweed (Alan Digweed, playing Nathan Detroit). It's like getting fondled by an old friend.

Nathan lies to Adelaide a lot. What is the biggest lie you have ever told?

If anyone's ever been convinced that I know anything about anything, that's my answer. I have two degrees in theatre, but I couldn't tell you a damn thing. That, and I swore blind that On the Town would be my last show with GMT... (We're glad you changed your mind and we get to have on the stage Andi. Love, The Production Team)

What is the most outrageous or outlandish excuse you've given to get out of doing something?

I don't think I've ever really used an outlandish ones - you have to make your excuses believable, or else what's the point? But I did once consider breaking my leg so I didn't have to get on a plane. I'd take pain over fear any day.

Finally, why should people come to see the show?

You know who else isn't coming to see the show? Trump. You really want to be like Trump?

Sky Masterson (Andi Denny)

Don't be like Trump and make sure you don't miss your chance to see Andi cross one more name off his actor's bucket list as Sky in Guys and Dolls next week. Visit our Box Office now to secure your tickets.
